PROJECT: BRAND IDENTITY, NAMING, VISUAL STRATEGY
CLIENT: LOULÉ MUNICIPALITY
DATE: 2020
DESIGN: Francisco Salgado Ré, Joana Sofia Babo
Developed for the municipality of Loulé, the VELA visual identity establishes a comprehensive branding framework for a new municipal bike-sharing network across the region. The project approaches public transport branding as a direct extension of territorial identity, synthesizing local geographical characteristics, regional material heritage, and modern micro-mobility requirements into a unified civic communication tool designed to maximize legibility and public adoption.

The designation VELA derives from a multi-layered semantic strategy linking maritime heritage with kinetic movement. While directly referencing the nautical sail — symbolizing wind propulsion, lightness, and the maritime coastline of the Algarve — the term phonetically resonates with the international root for cycling (vélo) and local colloquial idioms. The resulting logomark features abstract geometric disc forms articulated by radial incisions, transforming functional mechanical components into an iconic visual mark.

The primary identity palette centers on a custom sand tone inspired directly by the region’s coastal dunes. This territorial color anchor is supported by a disciplined neutral spectrum of white, black, and slate gray, establishing a distinct institutional tone.

The graphic architecture is engineered for seamless scalability across both physical and digital touchpoints. The identity extends across the bicycle fleet, custom docking terminals, municipal service vehicles, outdoor advertising networks, promotional merchandise, and mobile software applications. By embedding territorial materiality into everyday urban transit, the system transforms municipal micro-mobility into an active ambassador of regional culture.
